The roof Leak Where is it and how do I find it.

let’s say you have a roof leak by one of your windows in your house. So now you know the point of entry. Do not assume that you have found the roof leak. otherwise like most people you will go up to the roof remove an area where the water is coming in and try to fix it yourself or maybe hire someone you think knows what they are doing When it comes to roofing. After spending a lot of money you find out from a roofing  pro that you were wrong. Turns out the Roof leak started at the top rig of the roof by a nail that penetrated a roof shingle. Then the water traveled from the top of a rafter down to the bottom before it entered your home. this is something you would not know.

Before going any further you need to know. We are talking about a roof frame house with roofing shingles. All frame houses have a crawl space with an opening to get in. some small some large when entering. If there is no light bring a flashlight and you may want to bring a long nail and a hammer. When walking or crawling around you need to make sure you stay on the frame studs or you may find yourself back inside the house by falling though the ceiling. Yes this has happened to me and many others. I didn’t say it would be easy. You will also want to try to keep away from the insulation most of them have fiberglass and can be very itchy. Ok now that you know what to be aware of go ahead and follow the water stains to its highest point that is where you will most likely find your roof leak if you indeed did find your roof leak good job.

You have found your roof leak.

Q. Now what and why did I bring a nail and a hammer?

A. Because this will help you save a lot of time.

You take your nail get as close as you can to where the water is coming in. use your hammer and drive the nail all the way in you want to make sure the nail is long enough to penetrate the roof so when you go back on the roof you will be able to locate it. Once located I hope you didn’t forget your hammer. Drive the nail all the way out so you have a flat surface now you can seal the tiny hole with a roof sealant until you decide how you would like to repair your roof leak.
There are different ways to go about this.
